Susan Zbikowski, PhD
Senior Vice President, Research, Training, & Evaluation
Dr. Zbikowski is an expert in translational research and routinely seeks opportunities to prove treatments effective in the context of existing health behavior change programs so that findings can be readily disseminated. As Senior Vice President at Alere Wellbeing, she identifies research studies critical to our mission and that of the greater scientific community, and she and her team of scientists seek and secure funding for these studies. She is also an Affiliate Investigator at the Group Health Research Institute. Dr. Zbikowski's research areas include: health improvement research, behavioral medicine, treatment adherence and engagement, using technology to improve health. She has been an investigator on over a dozen grants funded the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states and private foundations. She has published over 45 peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic of smoking cessation and frequently speaks at national conferences. Dr. Zbikowski completed her M.S. and Ph.D in Developmental Psychology at the University of Memphis and received her B.A. in Psychobiology at Wellesley College.

Terry Bush, PhD
Associate Investigator
Dr. Bush received her BS in psychology from the University of Washington and her Ph.D. in research psychology from the University of Southampton in England. Terry’s experience includes cancer prevention work at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Collaborative care for depressed persons at Group Health Cooperative and Tobacco Cessation studies at Alere. Dr. Bush has over 20 years of research experience designing and testing interventions pertaining to improving care for tobacco users and people with diabetes, depression, anxiety, and multiple chronic conditions. She has expertise in treatment adherence, qualitative and quantitative research design, and statistical analyses. She has contributed as Investigator or co-Investigator on numerous NIH-funded and state-funded research studies and is the Principal Investigator for her study, “Developing Behavioral Treatment Approaches for Obese Tobacco Quit Line Users” (1R21DA026580-01).

Beatriz Carlini, PhD, MPH
Associate Investigator
Dr. Carlini is an Associate Investigator at Alere Wellbeing and a Research Scientist at the University of Washington’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. In the last six years, Dr. Carlini’s academic trajectory has been focused on the utilization of technology to increase reach and access to effective tobacco cessation treatment among underserved populations. She is the Principal Investigator of an R21 (CA141568-01) testing Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology to re-engage low-income smokers in evidence-based quitline treatment and co-investigator on a large clinical trial to assess the efficacy of IVR-delivered intervention to prevent relapse into smoking (R01 CA138936-01).

Kelly Carpenter, PhD
Research Scientist
Dr. Carpenter received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Clark University in 2000. Before joining Alere Wellbeing in 2011, Kelly spent 10 years developing and evaluating technology-based health behavior change programs. She has been Principle Investigator of more than 15 Small Business Innovative Research grants and contracts from the NIH and CDC. She has developed web-based training programs, assessment tools and patient interventions in the areas of addiction treatment, chronic pain, cognitive behavioral stress management, PTSD, tobacco cessation, Motivational Interviewing, and primary care-based interventions. She was also Principle Investigator of a contract from the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health to develop a provider training program to provide quitline education and referral skills.

Jennifer Lovejoy, PhD
Senior Vice President, Clinical Development & Support
Dr. Lovejoy is the Senior Vice President of Clinical Development & Support at Alere Wellbeing. She holds a Ph.D. in BioPsychology from Emory University and completed postdoctoral training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Emory University School of Medicine, where she specialized in obesity and diabetes research.
Dr. Lovejoy’s clinical research program has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and NASA. She maintains adjunct faculty appointments at Bastyr University and University of Washington School of Public Health, has published over 50 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, over 15 chapters and review articles, and is a frequent speaker on obesity and nutrition at national and international conferences. She is the immediate Past-President of the Obesity Society.

Abigail Halperin, MD, MPH
Tobacco Medical Expert
Dr. Abigail Halperin received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and completed Family Medicine residency training at the University of Washington-affiliated Swedish Hospital program in Seattle. After 12 years in a primary care medical practice, she received a Master in Public Health degree as a National Research Service Award Fellow at the University of Washington in 2000 and began an academic career focused on the prevention and treatment of tobacco addiction and tobacco-related diseases. Dr. Halperin, formerly the Medical Director of Free & Clear, currently serves on the faculty of the University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Public Health and is an Affiliate Investigator at Alere Wellbeing.

Mona Deprey, MS
Associate Director of Research Operations
Mona joined Alere Wellbeing in September 2004 as a research project manager. Her previous experience includes coordinating four large NIH Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants. Mona earned her bachelor’s degree at University of New Hampshire in nutritional sciences and a master's degree in health education at Oregon State University. She was an intern at Oregon Research Institute which led into a position with Oregon Center for Applied Sciences and management of numerous SBIR projects.

Brooke Magnuson, MA
Sr. Research Grant Manager
Brooke is a Research Grant Manager that joined Alere Wellbeing, Inc. in 2009. Prior to working at AWI Brooke coordinated grants in the cancer research field. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Puget Sound and master’s degree from the University of Washington. She interned with King County Public Health and Senator Patty Murray’s Office prior to her current position.

Lyndsay Miles, MA
Associate Grant Manager
Lyndsay joined Alere Wellbeing in November, 2010 as an associate research grants manager. In her previous experience, she worked in roles including research assistant and research associate in community-based substance-abuse intervention research and evaluation conducted throughout the state of Alaska. She received her MA from Indiana University in 2006.

Mark Campbell
Research Grant Manager
Mark joined the Alere Wellbeing team as a research grant manager in August, 2011. Before coming to AWI, he spent more than 10 years managing and directing drug efficacy studies in the field of neuroscience for a contract research organization. Mark received his BSc from St. Francis Xavier University in 1992, and his PMP certificate from the Project Management Institute in 2011.
