Etta Short, MSPH, Director of Learning and Development:
Recently I overheard two recent graduates of the Free & Clear New Hire Program talking about their training experience. One new Quit Coach said, "I've never taken a position where the training has been as thorough. I had excellent preparation on all counseling skills." The second Quit Coach seconded the praise, highlighting the training team: "The first-hand information from the trainers was especially helpful."
I was glad to hear this first-hand report on the impact of the 120-hour classroom training curriculum. Quit Coaches receive comprehensive training in the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, and brief solution-focused therapy techniques to treat tobacco dependence. They are trained to respond to callers in a non-judgmental way with an understanding of each individual's readiness to quit tobacco. Training combines reading, lecture, discussion, classroom activities, observation, role-plays, simulation, one-on-one mentoring and telephone/computer practice. Newly hired Quit Coaches must pass a skill assessment review before delivering supervised calls.
Before graduating from the training program, Trainees complete an additional 120 hours on the Transition Team, where they make live calls with support and supervision.
Quit Coach education doesn't end with this first training; the New Hire Course is the first of many training opportunities. We offer a catalogue of ongoing courses that reinforce and enhance skills needed to help our participants become smoke free.
The Free & Clear training department is dedicated to lead, inspire and help employees measurably improve their skills, knowledge and job satisfaction through innovation and quality education. Our vision is to create a vibrant and empowered organization one employee at a time.
